Katowice Open - a letter of thanks
The WTA Katowice Open 2016 tournament has proved a huge sporting, organizational, attendance as well as media success. Our efforts have been recognized by both the spectators and the Women’s Tennis Association, which in its summary report of this year’s edition has given us the highest grades. Since its inception, from edition to edition the tournament has enjoyed ever growing popularity both in Poland and abroad. In 2016, the matches played in Katowice were broadcast to 100 countries worldwide while 23,000 tennis fans watched them from the stands. Katowice Open 2016 was the fourth and, sadly, the last edition of the tournament taking place in Poland. The sports agency Octagon, which holds the licence for the tournament, has decided that from 2017 it will be held in Switzerland, in Biel, a town with a long tennis tradition. Regrettably, the business environment in Poland is not conducive to tennis development on such a scale. Polish market is not ready for high investments necessary for such a prestigious event so it was difficult for us to compete with Biel, which has the advantage of stronger financial backing. However, we would like to thank the City of Katowice and other entities which have helped us organize the tournament for the last four years by devoting money, time and hard work to promote this beautiful sports discipline and to ensure a high quality of the event. It has been an honour for us to be able to contribute to the promotion of tennis in Poland by organizing the country’s biggest tennis tournament for the last four years.
