Only 2 days are left until the WTA Katowice Open 2016 tournament is officially inaugurated. The Spodek Hall and the International Congress Centre, both in Katowice, the host city of the tournament, are already undergoing a transformation into the arena of world-class tennis competition. At the press conference, the tournament’s organizers have announced the names of further players added to the tournament line-up: in the main draw, we will see Magda Linette, Vera Lapko, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Donna Vekic, and Marketa Vondrousova along with Wiktoria Kulik will play in the qualifying draw. Also, a detailed schedule of side events, including the schedule of fan meetings with the players, has been presented.

It is not long now till 2nd April when the qualifiers for entry into the main draw of the Katowice Open tournament are scheduled to start on the courts of the Spodek Hall and of the International Congress Centre in Katowice. At the press conference held in Galeria Katowicka on 31st March, the President of the City of Katowice extended his warm invitation to this year’s tournament to all tennis fans around the world.

- I have the immense pleasure to invite you all to partake in this highly exciting world-class tennis event returning yet again to Katowice, whether from the stands of the Spodek Hall and the International Congress Centre or via television broadcasts. The WTA Katowice Open tennis tournament provides a perfect opportunity to promote our City in 21 languages and in 70 countries worldwide! Simultaneously, like during hand ball events, we are also planning another run of our “unconventional” promotional campaign addressed to the residents of our City – explained Marcin Krupa, President of the City of Katowice.
In the mean time, the organizers of the tournament have announced changes to the main draw line-up. The injured Alison van Uytvanck and Denisa Allertova have been replaced by Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Donna Vekic. Octagon, the sports agency which holds the rights to the tournament, has granted its “wild card” for the main draw to Vera Lapko of Belarus whereas Octagon’s “wild card” for the qualifying draw has gone to Marketa Vondrousova of Czech Republic. And finally, the one remaining “wild card” for the qualifying draw has been given by the organizers of Katowice Open to the talented junior Wiktoria Kulik.
- I am pleased to announce that in the main draw we will also see Magda Linette, who has taken the “special exempt” spot not filled by WTA this year. On Friday at 15:00 CET, further announcements will be made about the remaining “wild cards” for the main draw. – said Jakub Puchalski, Sports Director of WTA Katowice 2016.
Katowice Open guarantees a high level of emotions both on and off the court. Like in previous years, the organizers have prepared a number of exciting side events. During this year’s tournament, these include: the 3rd Katowice Wheelchair Tennis Championships for the Cup of the President of the City of Katowice, the 3rd Katowice Amateur Championships for the Cup of the President of the City of Katowice, another run of KIDS CUP for the Cup of the President of the City of Katowice as well as the Talentiada of Elementary and Junior High Schools for the Cup of the President of the City of Katowice. All the sports side events will be held under the joint name of the “Polish Slam 2016” Intergenerational Integrated Tennis Tournament.
- No tournament of such rank would be complete without events promoting tennis among children, the disabled and amateur players from the given discipline. As usual, all willing fans will get the chance to meet their favourite WTA players in person. From 2nd - 6th April at 16:30 CET, special autograph sessions will take place at Galeria Katowicka, and starting from Monday, 4th April, tennis enthusiasts will also be able to get autographs from the chosen tournament players in the fan zone on the mezzanine level at the Spodek Hall. Also, for the first time, an additional training court will be open to the spectators during the entire tournament. It is on this court that between 2nd and 5th April at 17:00 CET the games of the Players Challenge competitions will be played. – announced Jakub Puchalski, Sports Director of WTA Katowice 2016.
